Referral of horses with neurologic symptoms

Horses with neurologic symptoms may need further diagnostic testing before referral to the WCVM Veterinary Medical Centre.

If you're considering the referral of a neurologic horse to the WCVM Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC), please contact the WCVM's large animal medicine service before submitting the referral.

The veterinary teaching hospital's key concern is the potential transmission of equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1). If this disease is on your list of differential diagnoses for your equine patient (based on the history or clinical findings), the horse will require diagnostic testing to rule out EHV-1 before referral to the VMC.

Horses that test positive for EHV-1 cannot be admitted to the VMC. This important measure is in place to protect the referral hospital from an EHV-1 outbreak, which would result in the closure of all in-house equine services at the WCVM.

Contact the WCVM Large Animal Clinic (306-966-7178) for more information.
