Referring an emergency case to the VMC? Make sure to call ahead

Taking a few minutes to call ahead to the WCVM Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC) about a small animal emergency referral case is a critical step for referring veterinarians and their clinics.

Your phone call helps to ensure a smoother transition of patient care, plus it gives the VMC time to confirm important details such as caseload and staffing levels for emergency and critical care before your client makes the trip to the veterinary teaching hospital.

In turn, the VMC’s clinical team can give you and your client advance notice about access to certain diagnostic services that have limited after-hours availability. It also allows the hospital to prepare your client in advance about emergency fees and potential costs for diagnostic and clinical services.

The VMC has compiled a helpful list of tips and advice for its referring veterinarians. The document outlines the hospital’s referral process and the steps involved in submitting an effective referral to the veterinary teaching hospital.

It also includes tips on how referring veterinarians can help to set their clients' expectations before their animals come to the veterinary teaching hospital.
